(Source: czrproduction

Did you know that Malaysia’s territory extends beyond its mainland to include the hidden gem of Sabah Island? Nestled between the Java Sea and the Celebes Sea, this island, also known as Labuan, is a well-kept secret.

While it’s famous among Malaysians for its offshore financial services and duty-free shopping, it remains largely undiscovered by foreign tourists. This makes Labuan an ideal destination for those seeking a tranquil escape with a touch of adventure.

Read on to learn more about what Labuan has to offer!

8 best things to do in Labuan

Labuan offers an abundance of activities for every type of traveler. Whether you’re into water sports, exploring historical sites, immersing yourself in local culture, or enjoying outdoor adventures like hiking and forest exploration, Labuan has something for you.

As a Federal Territory of Malaysia, Labuan enjoys self-governance with its own flag and anthem while adhering to many of Malaysia's federal laws. Visitors benefit from Malaysia’s 90-day visa-free stay, offering ample time to explore the island's unique charm and attractions.

  1. Go diving with four shipwrecks

Diving is Labuan Island's top attraction, drawing enthusiasts to its World War II shipwrecks which are now vibrant with marine habitats.

Suitable for beginners to intermediate divers, the depths range from 100-115 feet (30-35 meters). You can book dives through hotels, travel agencies, or directly with local dive centers and schools. During WWII, Labuan played a crucial role in supporting the Allies in the Pacific.

While not all shipwrecks were wartime participants, a tour will guide you to these fascinating underwater sites, including:

  • The Australian Wreck

The Australian Wreck (SS de Klerk), situated 23 km from Labuan, southwest of Pulau Rusukan Besar, has a haunting history. Originally a cargo steamer, it was repurposed by the Japanese to transport women prisoners during WWII.

Tragically, the ship struck a mine while attempting to leave Borneo, resulting in its sinking and the loss of 339 lives. Named after the Australian Air Force, which bombed it, the wreck now rests about 30 meters underwater.

  • The American Wreck

The American Wreck (US Salute) is located about 1.5 km from the Australian Wreck. Bombed by the US in 1945, it was split into two parts, resulting in the deaths of nine people. Their names are engraved on a plaque viewable only by diving. Due to its positioning, this dive site presents a challenging experience.

  • The Cement Wreck

The Cement Wreck (MV Tung Hwang) is located 21 km from Labuan, east of Pulau Kuraman. It earned its name because it was carrying cement from Brunei when it sank.

  • The Blue Water Wreck

Located 34 km from Labuan, northwest of Pulau Kuraman, the Blue Water Wreck (Mabini Padre) was a fishing ship that sank in 1981 due to a fire. Fortunately, no lives were lost. On clear days, visibility can reach up to 40 meters at this Labuan dive site.
